Follow these moves with robotic consistency and it's guaranteed you'll do better than the guy sitting next to you, who is probably making random decisions, without a bit of science behind him.
Best Time to Visit Europe
For France and all of Central Europe, October is the dovetailing time of year for decent temperatures and dipping prices. "The weather is still holding up, all the French kids are back in school, and the American tourists are gone," says Howard Lewis, owner of Chartwell Travel in Los Angeles, one of America's top travel agents for European vacations. "November is a little bit colder, but you get all the great winter dishes and lots of wonderful mushrooms. Then, if you get too cold, you can go down to Italy, where it is a little bit warmer." The surprisingly good time for visiting Paris specifically, says Lewis, is August. "Most of the Parisians are gone and you get all kinds of deals there that month."
In terms of England, Lewis says, "If you're willing to put up with some bad weather, but want low prices, go there in May, October, or November. That's when the locals pay more attention to you and are all-around friendlier because there are so few tourists. You'll feel like you have the whole country to yourself."
Best Time to Play Basketball
Skip your morning game of hoops (or tennis, for that matter) and save it for the late afternoon or early evening. According to Dr. Cedric Bryant, chief exercise physiologist for the nonprofit American Council on Exercise, "For sports that require dexterity and reaction time, it's best to play between noon and nine P.M. This was determined through studies in which individuals' performances were measured in tests of reaction time. The other factor, though, is core body temperature. It tends to be highest between four and six P.M., SO that might be the ultimate peak time. Researchers believe that the elevated temperature speeds up the conduction of nerve impulses and enzymatic activity, which combine to make chemical reactions happen quicker at the cellular level of the body." In other words, if you're going to try dunking, five P.M. is go time, baby.
Best Time to Plead the Fifth
Bruce Cutler is well known as the chrome-domed pit-bull attorney who spent many years helping famed Mafia kingpin John Gotti earn the nickname "the Teflon Don." In the course of keeping charges from sticking to Gotti, Cutler wielded the Fifth Amendmentâwhich allows a person to avoid testifying in court if what he is going to say may incriminate himâas routinely as Gotti's henchmen wielded revolvers. "I would say that all the time is the best time to plead the Fifth Amendment, particularly when you're dealing with the authorities," says Cutler. "The exception would be if you have decided to work with them." Of course, though, if you've hired somebody like Bruce Cutler to represent you, chances are good that you will not be turning state's evidence anytime soon.
Considering this for a beat, Cutler adds, "There are moments when a person feels that what he says will get him out of a jam, but that is rarely the case.
